Nicholas Collins is a glass artist who launched his practice in 2014 after many years enjoying the development and refining of his craft without the pressure of business. His core Collectable products are predominantly decorative pieces including vessels and platters and more recently he has taken a leap into furniture design using a number of kiln-forming glass techniques.
Nicholas has a long-standing fascination with optical art, minimal designs that hold the viewer’s attention through simple colour pattern and form, and his aim is to create functional pieces that play with the viewer.
Operating from his studio and workshop at the edge of the Lake District, in Maryport, Cumbria, Nicholas produces designs of limited quantities (editions), which are quality, crafted pieces using kiln forming glass techniques. He primarily uses opaque and semi-translucent glass, which are notably complex in their nature. His designs are formed using moulds and finished by hand using diamond tools and many pieces are signed upon completion.
His philosophy is to produce exceptionally well designed pieces, which are expertly crafted objects combined with cutting-edge manufacturing technology that bring together both function and visual appeal with a permanent value.
He makes sophisticated and distinctive tabletop ranges using bold graphic patterns that follow a theme of optical illusion. As well as the full range of Collectable products, he offers his clients a bespoke service to design and manufacture special projects where his philosophy is about pushing the boundaries of manufacture combined with traditional kiln-forming skills in glass making. From his studio, Nicholas hand makes everything to order and this is where he can offer his clients a variety of coloured glass options to develop designs to his client’s needs.
